Knowing God

Regardless of our individual stories, we all share in the common experience of sin. When we sin, we miss a mark or fall short of a goal or standard. Sin separates us from God, His love, and His intended destiny for us. But God wants you to know Him and experience His love. God loves us and wants the very best for us. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The only thing that keeps us from experiencing God's love is our sin. (Sin is “going your own way” and falling short of God's will for your life). Isaiah 59:2 says, “Your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden His face from you.” The key to knowing God is to receive Jesus and the forgiveness He offers. Pray about your relationship – hand it to God! Say to Him, “God I love this person, but I want to know what You think.” You even have to be prepared to let go of the relationship if you feel that God says, “No.” In giving the relationship to God completely, it takes it beyond human desire and attraction. This “giving it all to God” places the relationship on a very strong foundation because during times of disappointment and trouble you can say, “This person is God’s will for my life, so I’m going to work through the problems with His strength.”  This abandonment to God keeps the relationship, the love, from being ruined by becoming possessive. When someone chooses to become selfish and “smoother” someone else, the love never grows or mature – it dies. True love is not selfish; it never makes a possession of that other person.
