How do I know I’ve found my spouse?
Pray
about your relationship – hand it to God! Say to Him, “God I love this person,
but I want to know what You think.” You even have to be prepared to let go of
the relationship if you feel that God says, “No.” In giving the relationship to
God completely, it takes it beyond human desire and attraction. This “giving it
all to God” places the relationship on a very strong foundation because during
times of disappointment and trouble you can say, “This person is God’s will for
my life, so I’m going to work through the problems with His strength.”
This
abandonment to God keeps the relationship, the love, from being ruined by becoming
possessive. When someone chooses to become selfish and “smoother” someone else,
the love never grows or mature – it dies. True love is not selfish; it never
makes a possession of that other person. Rather, true love is a sharing of
lives together.
The
second step is to receive a confirmation from God as to whether or not the
person is God’s will for your life. In our case, God confirmed His will through
other people in our lives, people we respected spiritually, as they affirmed the
relationship. I had been praying specifically for confirmation and on separate occasions
two older people encouraged me. God can use many ways to confirm His will. Some
of these ways also include His speaking to you during your Bible reading and
private devotions, your prayer time, and through family members and Christian
friends who know you best.
