City Hall Square
On Tuesday 25th January 2011 millions of protestors drawn from a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds gathered around Tahrir square and demanded the overthrow of the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. On 11th February 2011, following weeks of determined popular protest and pressure, Mubarak resigned from office. Grievances of Egyptian protesters were focused on legal and political issues including police brutality, state of emergency laws, lack of free elections and freedom of speech, uncontrollable corruption, and economic issues including high unemployment, food price inflation, and low minimum wages. The primary demands from protest organizers were the end of the Hosni Mubarak regime and the end of emergency law; freedom, justice, a responsive non-military government, and a say in the management of Egypt's resources.
A walk around the city of Nairobi near 20th Century Cinema area and City Hall, a crowd is slowly building up with a view of venting out their frustration of bad governance and the rot in our country.
These groups of people have a cause they are pursuing and with public support the vision will be realized. The issues bedeviling us in our nation today is a result of continued lack of commitment to good governance whereby those entrusted with responsibility of offering leadership have resorted to exploit and taking advantage of us the common people.
The corruption disease and scandals hitting our headlines time and again are not new to us and unless deliberate effort is taken from the top to fight it then nothing can stop the bottom from doing so. We at the bottom have allowed to be manipulated by the top for their favour and that is why time has come to say NO.
Let’s join hands and support this cause. With consistent pressure to the government then positive action will be taken with the view of addressing fundamental issues affecting us in the society that are not given priority and full attention.
